Farmers pay their gratitude to the Sun by cooking milk rice using red rice on the first day of first Tamil calendar month of Thai Pongal. They get up before dawn: put Kolam in front of their homes and place a new pot to cook rice. The happily light crackers when the boiled milk overflows. After offering milk rice to the Sun, they share it with relatives and neighbors. On the next day farmers cook milk rice again to show their thankfulness to the cattle which plough their fields, and to cow which supply milk.
